A Video Journey..
through old letters, diaries and journals, newspapers, sketches and
photographs from the early and mid-nineteenth century.
Courageous pioneers braved attacks by outlaws and Indians, natural
elements and many challenges. It is their stories, pulled along
continuous lines of wagons on the Oregon, California, Mormon,
Cheyenne-Deadwood and Bozeman Trails, that transport us back to the
settlement of the West.

THE
CHEYENNE-DEADWOOD TRAIL
There were numerous trails into the Black Hills during the gold
rush days. The most famous was the Cheyenne to Deadwood Trail
over which thousands of passengers, tons of freight and express,
and millions of dollars of “treasure” traveled between 1876 and
1887. Stagecoaches laden with gold bullion were inviting targets
for road agents along the way. This and the danger of Indian
attacks, made this one of the most dangerous western trails.

THE BOZEMAN TRAIL
The era
of Western Trails is one of many great chapters in American
history and a significant part of the Wyoming story.
Events of
this era are marked by action and high adventure, great courage,
determination and tragedy.
The
Bozeman Trail was a transportation corridor that crossed Wyoming
from south to north, providing access to the Montana gold fields,
but it also passed through Indian hunting grounds. As a result, it
was one of the bloodiest trails on the western frontier.
